Cutting out wooden door hangers isn’t just for the hardware savvy anymore. Thanks to tons of awesome technology, using a printable wooden door hanger template is now super easy. In our online shop, you can find a ton of printables designed specifically to make your own. Print them off at home and use a jigsaw to cut your own blank.

If you’re looking to save a few dollars by cutting your own door hanger blank, it’s a great way to add some money back into your business – and a great way to cut down on supply costs if you’re a DIY and crafting superstar!

First Things First – Download Your Template

Our online shop has a variety of door hanger templates, one for every season and every occasion. Once you’ve decided what you like and placed your order, your file will be ready for download. Make sure you’re logged on to the account that you purchased from – the file will be hanging out there in the account. If you don’t have an account, your file will be emailed to the email you entered when purchasing. This method will take a bit longer to receive your file but shouldn’t take longer than a few hours.

Accessing Your File

When you download, you will get four different files:

  • SVG: for the use of vector images
  • JPEG: standard image use
  • PDF: black and white, for printing a poster-sized version
  • PNG

Check out our rundown on all the file types you need to know and what they’re used for to learn more!

Printing Out Your Template

I recommend printing out the PDF file in order to make your door hanger. Make sure your print settings are optimized for this type of printing. You’ll want to:

  • Go to file > print
  • A popup box will appear, got to the “Page Sizing & Handling” section > make sure you check the “actual size box”
  • Then check the orientation setting and check off “landscape”

Your file will print out as multiple pages that you can tape together to create a whole image.

Putting it all Together

Take all the pages and tape along the edges, lining them up as straight as possible. Once you’ve fit everything together, cut along the edges of the design, taking out the white space (around the design and not in the design) and enabling you to have a smooth guide for when you’re ready to cut the wood with a jigsaw.

Next, you’ll trace the outline of the door hanger, along the black lines of your printed template with graphite paper. Make sure that the entire area you’re tracing is covered by graphite paper, with the shiny side down. Using a pencil, trace the design to transfer it to the wood.

The design will now be visible, ready for you to cut out and paint!

Next Steps

You’ll need to purchase a jigsaw to cut the traced design from the wood. Follow the proper safety protocols when using power tools, and always follow manufacturer instructions and recommendations.

When you’re done cutting, you can use the traced lines from the design to guide you when you start painting. You can always refer back to the color copies, like the PNG, of your digital download to mirror how it looks and see the detail of the design.

Keep your sign neatly folded in a file folder to store and use for next time. You can find many different designs in my online shop to indulge in your DIY hobby or to start selling! All door hanger templates will work the same unless otherwise specified. Follow these same instructions to keep on making beautiful signs!
