I get it – finding a Mother’s Day gift is hard when there are about 500 other Hallmark holidays (a phrase I’ve coined for any holiday where you are encouraged to buy and buy and buy useless stuff). But I just wanted to let you know…some stuff is better left at the store. As a mom, it’s nice to be appreciated, but trust me, there are just some things in this world that don’t scream, “Thank you, mom!”
1. Coupons
Many children will hate me for this one. It’s easily the easiest gift out there. Nothing says you totally forgot it was mother’s day, so you took a sharpie from the depths of your junk drawer, and found some old printer paper, then used your origami folding skills from middle school to make an old rendition of a mail-in coupon book. Seriously, just put the marker down and go to Bath and Body Works instead.
2. Breakfast in Bed
Okay, this one is actually not that bad when it’s not a gift. If this is the only thing you do for mom on Mother’s Day, expect coal in your stocking.
3. Cleaning supplies
What are we, your maids?! We clean up after everyone every day. By giving me a Swiffer mop, you’re telling me I should start cleaning more. Really love that.
4. Photo frames
We have enough of these. Please. We already have your 3rd grade, 7th grade, and high school graduation pictures all over the house. Don’t do it.
5. Spending the day with your kids
We see you every day. You have already given us that gift many times. Plus, you can’t tell me that any kid that gives you a “spend the day with me :)” token isn’t going to just end up throwing a fit when you choose somewhere for dinner that has something besides just chicken strips?!
If you have already gotten your mom any of these things, it’s not too late to take them back. Stores will be open through the weekend. Online shopping is a thing. I promise we won’t mind if you tell us our super awesome beauty products from our favorite brands are coming in a few days late. We love to be pampered. Just as long as it’s not anti-aging cream. 😉
**All jokes aside, if you show your mom love and appreciation on Mother’s Day, she will be thankful no matter what! Enter the cheesy saying, “the real gift is you!”
